Earlier today, the news broke that Ted Ginn Jr. was headed to Chicago. Ginn has served as the Saints’ deep throw threat since 2017. The Saints will now look for a player to fill that role, and that player is already in the building. Deonte Harris was an All-Pro and a Pro Bowler as a rookie this past season on special teams, and he seems like the perfect player to step into the role Ted Ginn is leaving.
When you watch Deonte Harris, the first thing you notice is his elite speed. As we all know from watching this past season, he is a big play waiting to happen. He consistently gave the Saints great field position in the special teams game. He is quick, twitchy, and hard to bring down. This would allow him to be extremely dangerous on end-arounds and bubble screens. Just get this guy into open space, and he will make stuff happen.
3rd Spot up for Grabs
We briefly saw Harris in the passing game towards the end of last season. Our top two WR targets are going to be Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. The third spot is up for grabs. Will it be Tre’Quan Smith or Taysom Hill? If Deonte Harris can make a few more plays like he did against the Vikings in the playoffs, the answer to that question will quickly become Deonte Harris. This guy has the capability to be a Tyreek Hill type weapon for the Saints. I mean look at him turn Xavier Rhodes inside out on this 50 yard bomb.
Sean Payton is an offensive master mind and knows when he has future stars on his hands. Harris has the potential to be one of those stars. He is just 22 years old and looks to have a long NFL career ahead of him in NOLA. Hold it.
