The New Orleans Saints just made a splash in free agency! ESPN’s Josina Anderson made every Saints fans’ night when she tweeted that Emmanuel Sanders is headed to New Orleans! This came out of the blue since the latest reports had him signing with division rival, Tampa Bay. The deal is for two years and worth $16 million. The deal can reach $19 million with incentives. The Saints just filled their biggest hole which was a WR opposite the best in the game, Mike Thomas. Not only did they do so cost effectively, but they got a WR1 caliber player to fill the void!
No Reason not to Like
When you look at it, there really is no reason at all to not like this deal. The Saints got a guy who runs a 4.41 40 time and caught 66 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns. Sanders brings veteran leadership with him having won a Super Bowl a few years ago with Denver. Not only did we get a steal on the price, but we took him off of one of our biggest NFC rivals, San Francisco. We all remember what he did against us this past season in The Dome, going for 157 yards, one receiving touchdown, and throwing for one as well.
Opening Everything Up
Not only does this move open up the field for Michael Thomas and the rest of the offense, but it also opens up the entire draft. Before signing Sanders, it was a given that we were going to have to select a WR with our first round pick. Now, we do not have to. We can address some discrepancies on the defense by selecting a Cornerback like LSU’s Kristian Fulton or Alabama’s Trevon Diggs. Or we could select a Linebacker like Patrick Queen out of LSU to run wild with Demario Davis. Conversely, we could just have no mercy on opposing defenses and select a WR anyway, giving Drew Brees another weapon to attack with. No matter what we do, make no mistake about it, Whodat Nation, this is an A+ signing. Hold it.
