Justin Jefferson: New Orleans Saints Prospect Review

The New Orleans Saints, in recent years, have built up a reputation of avoiding players out of LSU in the draft. Besides Will Clapp late in the 2018 draft, the Saints haven’t drafted an LSU player since 2010. LSU’s star receiver Justin Jefferson could change that trend if he is still available at pick 24.

College Standout

Justin Jefferson was one of many stars on the greatest team college football has ever seen. This past season, Jefferson brought in 111 catches for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns. He has the second most touchdowns in college football behind teammate Ja’Marr Chase who had 20 TDs. He became a household name in the CFP Semifinal against Oklahoma when he pulled in 14 catches for 227 yards and 4 touchdowns.

All-Around Player

Justin Jefferson is an all-around great player. He has great size at 6’3 192 lbs. Jefferson has good route running and good hands. His speed is underrated as well. At the combine he ran a 4.43 40 yard dash. This was faster than any expert expected. His greatest skill might be his run after the catch. He is great as a deep threat, but he might be even better on intermediate routes across the field. He creates separation so easily and once he has the ball in his hands, good luck catching him.

How to Get Him

Earlier in the draft process, Jefferson was expected to be there waiting for Saints at pick 24. However, after a great combine he has begun moving up the board. He is expected to go anywhere in the 15-25 range. It will all depend on how things play out of draft night. Do not expect the Saints to trade up, however if he is there at pick 24, it would be difficult for Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis to resist giving Drew Brees another weapon. Hold it.
