We are roughly a month out from the big dance. March Madness gives the Super Bowl a run for it’s money as the most exciting sporting event. Sleepers are the teams that have a shot to win, but are not one of the favorites. Any gambler will be trying to look for that team that offers the most bang for your buck. As of right now there are three teams to us that stand out as a worthy March Madness sleeper.
March Madness Sleeper: San Diego State
San Diego State is the #4 ranked team in the nation. Sitting at 23-0, they don’t really sound much like a sleeper. Well San Diego State is currently at 18/1 odds to win the tournament. Why does Big Easy Bets consider them a sleeper? There are six other teams with better odds to win it all. San Diego State very possibly could be 29-0 going into their conference tournament. I expect them to be a 1 seed in the tournament and to have an easier run than most. One of the top defensive teams in the nation, they have physical guards and depth at the forward position. 18/1 odds is very good value for one of the top contending teams.
The Dayton Flyers sitting at 20-2, are the #6 ranked team in the nation. Projected to be a 2 seed in the tournament, Dayton has everything it needs to make a deep run. First and foremost, it starts with Obi Toppin. The 6’9 power forward is a sure fire NBA lottery pick and in the running for the John R. Wooden award. Dayton owns the nations number one offense, averaging 82.1 points a game and assisting on over 62 percent of their field goals. This team screams “bang for your buck” at 20/1 odds.
West Virginia is the longest shot of the bunch. I can promise that nobody wants to play “Press Virginia” in march. Known for their suffocating full court press, this team is also poised for a run. The Mountaineers have one of the deepest benches in America going twelve deep. Seven different players are shooting over 40 percent from the field. Quality defense and a deep bench are a recipe for success. With one of the more experienced coaches in Bob Huggins, this could be a team to watch at 28/1 odds. These are all subject to change, depending on how the season plays out. For now these are the three teams we see value on. Hold It.
