Last week, the Saints got off to a great start. While the offense did not look amazing, the defense and special teams looked great. Tom Brady and the Bucs looked completely inferior to the Saints. In week 2, the Saints are in Las Vegas to take on the Raiders in their new stadium. Here are the Keys to the Contest.
Contain Josh Jacobs
Josh Jacobs is the star of the Raiders’ offense, and he is quickly becoming a top running back in the league. Last week, Jacobs ran the ball 25 times for 93 yards and three touchdowns against Carolina. This week should be much tougher for Jacobs against the best run defense in the league, but the Saints have to be up to the task. If the Saints can shut down Jacobs, this game might not even be close.
Wide Receivers Step Up
Michael Thomas suffered a high ankle sprain against Tampa Bay and will be out for 2-4 weeks. Thomas has been the number one option for this offense for a long time. Besides Thomas, the Saints have struggled finding a number two receiver. This off-season we got one in Emmanuel Sanders. Now with Thomas out, Sanders will become the WR1. It will be up to Tre’Quan Smith step into that WR2 role. Look for Sean Payton to get Deonte Harris involved in the offense more as well.
Special Teams Step Up Again
The Saints have one of the best special teams units in the league. It will be important that they step up once again. Deonte Harris will be key, as always, in the return game and earning good field position. The same can be said for Thomas Morstead when it comes to pinning the Raiders deep in their own half.
If the Saints can contain Josh Jacobs, have their wide receivers step up, and play well on special teams, they should have no problem finishing week 2 at 2-0. Hold it!
