Minutes ago ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news that there is a good chance that the NFL will likely be changing its playoff format in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. If applied, the changes will take effect this 2020 season.

How does it work?

Under the new system, seven teams will make the playoffs instead of six. However, instead of two teams getting a first round bye, only one will earn the week off. The remaining six teams will all face off on Wildcard Weekend.

Why Would the NFL do this?

The big question that everyone will be asking is why? Why would the NFL do this? Why would they change the system that has been working so well for so long? The answer is the chedda. It will make the NFL more money. With two extra teams making the playoffs, the NFL can now have two extra playoff games on Wildcard Weekend. That means more TV revenue and ticket sales.

Positives and Negatives

On the bright side, we get more playoff football! Everyone loves that. On the downside, the playoff field will be watered down and one team from each conference will have a major advantage over the rest of the field. Hold it.
