I Thought Hurricane Season Was Over…
Ahhh hurricane season, the most wonderful time of the year when you sacrifice your time and energy staring at cones and models only to have the weather gods call an audible to Lake Charles. Sound familiar? Anyway, this weeks Wrestling with Nostalgia follows in that same theme. Storms MY GUY. Instead of worshiping the weather God Jim Cantore. We are throwing it back to a time when superheroes ran around in the WWE. That’s right you guessed it.The resident and chief fun guy Shane “The Hurricane” Helms. Welcome to this week’s edition of Wrestling With Nostalgia: Hurricane Helms.
Underrated? I Don’t Think So
Hurricane is a guy that doesn’t readily show up in the front of people’s minds when thinking of main eventers. He wasn’t a main event guy but, he was a certainly a main even contributor. Just take a look at this masterclass between he and The Rock. He gets help from the GOAT but the fact that The Rock signs off on this W is proof that he was one of the boys. There’s no babyface or heel in this equation. You want to see The Rock dazzle you with the People’s Elbow as much as you want to see Hurricane pull off the upset. This is great in-ring storytelling. It’s how you move a narrative forward while giving a push to a smaller guy. That’s a little thing called branding your gimmick.
The best asset Hurricane had was his comedic ability. In wrestling nothing is more of a polarizing topic than being a comedic wrestler. However, for a wrestler portraying a superhero, this is the perfect combination. He brings equal parts silly and astonishing which in turn consistently put Helms in the spotlight. From sharing the ring with The Rock to sharing segment time, Helms had the ability to go 1 on 1 with the great one.
Man of the People
Much of Helms success can be attributed to just being a likable guy. He is a guy that has endeared himself to the wrestling business inside and outside the ring. A wrestling lifer. I had the pleasure of meeting Helms during Wrestlemania 34 Weekend. Dude could not have shown more love to me and the fans in attendance. A man that shakes every hand in the room. Respect. We should all aspire to be more like Hurricane. Great dude, great wrestler, and even better Twitter follow. So check him out. Make him trend on WWE Network and show your love to this guy.
That does it for this week’s edition of Wrestling With Nostalgia. Check out the prior WWN’s if you missed out. Go to the Mayo Merch Jar for that sale this weekend.
